From Rifle to Rod: Combining Deer Hunting and Trout Fishing in Utah 2023

YouTube Poster

This year our youngest was drawn for Utah’s Mule Deer Tag.  This is her first deer hunt in Utah.  We continue to be amazed on how awesome Utah’s youth program is.  Every year our kids get the opportunity to hunt and we as a family get to make these great memories with them that will last a lifetime.

We started bright and early on opening day in the middle of southern Utah.  We woke up before dawn, fueled by excitement, anticipation and pop tarts. This year was much warmer than last year where we got covered in snow the 2nd day hunting.  We made our way down the canyons of trees that covered the landscape in beautiful autumn colors.

It didn’t take long before we found our first buck.  He was barely legal and it was only a 1/2 hour into our hunt.  Reagan decided to pass.  We were only about a mile down the trail when we saw another buck.  He was running with a couple does.  He was bigger than the one we saw andReagan decided that was the one she wanted.  We snuck around the side of the hill and waited for the buck to walk around.  He came right where we thought he was going to be and with a single shot Reagan dropped him.  In less than 2 hours our hunt was over but the adventure was just beginning.

After a quick morning of hunting we packed up our gear and headed out to fish.   Luckily, Utah offers a ton of fantastic fishing spots to explore. From the serene crystal clear lakes nestled in the Dixie National Forest to the winding rivers cutting through the beautiful canyons, there’s a fishing spot for everyones taste. We made our way to Panguitch lake and fished the shores. We caught some pretty big trout and even made some friends with a group of girls from Nevada as we were leaving.  We shared what the fish were bitting on, helped them rig up their poles and even put them on the honey hole that we had our luck in.  Everywhere we go we always seem to be meeting people while we fish.

The next day was Don’s birthday so we rented a boat and fished Otter Creek Reservoir with one of our good friend and her son that just moved to cedar city.  The morning fishing was slow on the lake so we ended up back at Panguitch Lake where our lucked changed and we didn’t stop catching.  We kept a couple of the trout and cooked them up along the lakes edge for some fish tacos.

The next morning we hit another great spot on the backside of Piute Reservoir  This small spot produced a fun morning of catching fish.  They were small but the catching never stopped.

Every fishing spot brings its fair share of memorable catches and experiences.  Maybe you reeled in a massive rainbow trout that put up an epic fight, or perhaps you had a heart-stopping moment when a bass almost snapped your line. These stories become the stuff of fishing legends. So be sure to capture the moment with a photo or video, embrace the joy of the catch, and smile in the memories that will last a lifetime.

If we weren’t fishing we were exploring the dirt roads around camp meeting many hunters around the area. Utah’s wilderness truly is a playground for the soul. Its natural beauty extends far beyond its hunting grounds and fishing spots. The state is home to so many hidden trails that leads you to discover amazing canyons, ancient rock formations, and all kinds of wildlife around every corner.

We hope you enjoyed coming along with us on this journey and that it inspired you to explore the beauty of nature, wherever you are. Remember, whether it’s hunting, fishing, or sharing your love of the outdoors with others, there’s something truly magical about connecting with the great outdoors. Until next time, stay wild and keep making those memories!
